The Beauty Of Baltic Sea – Latvia
The coastline of Latvia stretches for over 500 kilometres along the Baltic Sea. Along its entire length, this coast never ceases to amaze with dunes, steep banks, sandstone outcrops, impressive rocks and caves.
One of those coastal gems is Akmeņrags Lighthouse. It is located on the western coast of Latvia, south of the resort town of Pāvilosta. It was first constructed in 1879, and is a key navigation point, in one of the most dangerous spots on the Baltic Sea to navigate by.
Akmenrag is a dangerous place for navigation, where a sandy and rocky shoal extends into the sea in the northwest direction. Another point of danger is the depth of the sea – which is on average 2 metres in the lighthouse’s vicinity.
The beaches are often surrounded by pine forests and dunes, creating a picturesque and serene environment. The Baltic coastline of Latvia is relatively flat, but there are some areas with high cliffs and rocky outcrops that provide stunning viewpoints of the sea.
